Because fo the metallurgy of the 960, I've been told by a valued expert Volvo mechanic that it is indeed very important to reach normal operating temperature. But I think this only matters over the long haul, as when a thermostat sticks open and the temp guage never reaches normal operating position.
On the other hand, I drive less than three miles each way to work and my 960 reaches normal temps in less than one mile, unless it's bitterly cold (zero and below).
