strut replacement-when? 700 1991

so with 2 bricks: 91 and 88 wagon both have 110k-120k freeway miles -when does one replace struts in front? what is predictable wear/replacement,since all rubber in front as well as ball joints,etc .... want to start from top down if I,m going to dissamemble. also do struts have shock that replaces first on these models with life expectancy of struts goooinnng looooonger-how do you tell? thanks in advance mark
