Stack O' Volvos... 200 1979

Being a die-hard fan of Fight Back! With David Horowitz (only THE best consumer info show on TV during the early 80's to mid 90's), let me elaborate a bit more on the famous Volvo test.

The stack of 10 Volvos shows was not done by Fight Back, but rather at Volvo's proving grounds in Sweeden. Yes, a big storm came and knocked all of the cars down (and a few landed fairly intact). They tried again with 6 (indoors, still in Sweeden) and it worked.

As far as the Coke truck test goes, this WAS actually tested by Fight Back in 1989. The Coke truck was the identical weight to the one used in the ads, hence the reason they settled on it. The Volvo tested? The 760 GLE. Planks of wood were not only placed UNDER the car to keep the suspension/tires from giving out, but also, a slab was placed on the ROOF of the car, simply as nothing more than a support for the truck to rest on. With the car set up (exactly the same way it was in the ads), it was time to give the Volvo the Fight Back commercial challenge. It passed. It passed with flying colors, to be exact. Now, granted---you're not invincible no matter what you drive, but it's always comforting to know that if I ever find a need to place 6 tons on the roof of my car, that it will hold up.

BTW: Anyone see the Boston Whaler fishing boat challenge? Their boats claimed that they could support the weight of a Volvo (!!!). Yep--they tested the ad. Yep...it passed :).

Viva la Volvo!!!!
