Disconecting Downshift Capabilty 700

While driving down the road my 89 740 GL will go into the downshift mode as if I had pressed the button on the shifter.I would like to disable this feature because I dont think my transmission enjoys the sudden surprise.The arrow on the instrumentation board lights up also when this happens.Thanks for the help
