Welcome to the BB. Join the VCOA too, you get a magazine of some interest, the Texas chapter meets here and there (last May in Galveston Scholes Field) and the dues are low.
You will benefit from the Bentley, mine came via eBay from Rusty at rprusa.com. I also have a Haynes, which I read in additon to the Bentley when contemplating a new job. AutoZone sometimes has Haynes.
Consider the Wiring Diagrams Manual (WDM) from Volvo, for the 1985 240 it's a 150-page treasure. Volvo p/n TP 30808/1, http://www.volvotechinfo.com/index.asp and while you are there look at some of the other Volvo "Green" books. The "Specifications" will tell you a lot about your car, and you may be able to order an owner's manual, too.
Since I have owned 240's since 1977, I have a "Bob's Garage Volvo Parts Department". I also have a sort of list of Houston parts places, P & P and aftermarketers.
Make use of the nearby Volvo dealership parts department (used to be Giles Volvo), get information B4 paying their prices. BUT go get all the things you need for the PCV (flame trap) service. It'll run you about $20. The hoses are pricey b/c they are made to withstand the attack of heat and oily vapors. Make a friend at the parts counter. Go on a Saturday if possible, fewer folks there from other shops, more there that are DIY-ers.
Good Luck,
Bob
