update: snapped piston ring? 700

Pouring over my haynes manual, the only thing I came across that mentioned a "ticking noise" is the description of a "broken piston ring" in the troubleshooting section in the beginning. The sound is faint, and only noticeable when I open the hood... is it in fact a broken piston ring or something else?

I drove the car yesterday (checked the oil as well) and didn't notice this sound at all. When I started it today I noticed it after doing the aforementioned spark plug clean/tightening. It seems odd that this piston ring would have broken in that brief amount of time with little or no use... If it is a broken piston ring, what can break it? Simple wear? The car has 205k miles, so it this to be expected?

Finally, if it is a broken piston ring can I drive the car untl I get it fixed? Could driving it cause a larger problem to occur? What kind of cost am I looking at to fix it?

Apprehensively awaiting a response...

-Rick
