I think it unlikely that you have a broken ring. You may try to isolate that noise by listening though a plastic tube. Move the end around to various points while listening at the other end. A 3 or 4 ft length of 3/8" tubing works fine. Have you considered injectors, they do make a clicking sound which is quite audible with or without the tube. Noisy valve lifter?
