ignition 140-160

Hey guys:
I'm back full circle to my problem being ignition. I had great fun removing trigger points, cleaning and adjusting. Chasing every connection and cleaning.
To cut a long story(weekend) short, I accidently discovered the fault. I was focusing in on coil as I found that I had a spark sometimes just as I tried to start the car, but then it went away for good. Quite by accident while testing everything I left the coil wire off the distributer, low and behold the car ran and ran well. I could see the fire jumping from the end of the wire at least 1mm before it dissapeared down the connection hole. I put the wire back on..no go! Put the wire halfway down the post, erratic firing! If i balance the rubber cup on the lip of the distributor it runs great. hardly the way to drive around. Does this make sense to anyone and what should I do...help.
PS similar events happened about 6 months ago, replaced rotor, cap, wires, plugs and now coil. Didn't fix it right away but somewhere in the agony of trying to sart it it caught and kept going until now. Do I have some lack of ground somewhere or where doe I start? Thanks for any and all suggestions.
