I always liked that, gapped to manufacturers specs. Which manufacturer? Volvo, Bosch, Chevy. You should gap the plugs so you know the gap is where is supposed to be. Who knows, maybe they were spot on. Having said that my experience has been with high energy ignitions, a little tighter or looser doesn't matter in the short run. If they're tight, you probably won't get 30,000 miles out of them. Just my 2 cents worth.
