1990 760 wagon AC question

Thinking of buying a 1990 Volvo 760. The AC compressor did not have a belt on it and the guy selling said that the compressor was shot and needed a new one. He also said that he was quoted $800 for a fix of compressor and conversion to r134a! is it just me or is that steap. I found a compressor for 65 bucks and Ive converted 2 of my other cars for just a few bucks. is there something Im not getting here? cant I just buy the compressor and have it installed and then shoot some r134a in there for maybe a total cost of $120? or will that cause some catistrofic unfixable failure in a volvos AC system?
