Only wish it was that easy
The biggest enemy to an AC system is air & moisture. Installing a used compressor, assuming it is in good shape, will not pose any problems, but the entire system must be drawn into a complete vacuum to remove ALL air, often nitrogen is flushed through the lines to purge any air. With the system in a complete vacuum the R134a is added, in a precise amount along with a measured amount of compressor lubricant. Converting to R134a also requires that any oil from the R12 is removed and a new reciever dryer installed.
By replacing your own compressor you can save a few $ but an AC shop is the only way to recharge the system
