I would recommend the 960 over the 240. From what I understand, 240s are simpler and easier to work on. The 960s are complex and come with lot of electronic stuff. The 960s also have more safety features like airbags, side impact airbags and ABS. Not all 240s have these.
I have a 1997 960 sedan (same as S90) and is the best car I have owned and driven. If you want to buy the car, be prepared to learn as much as you can about the car and don't ignore even the minor problems. These (960, S/V90) cars need regular maintenance. Make sure the timing belt was changed at 70K. If not, get it done right away. Use of synthetics (engine oil, ATF) is highly recommended and use only Volvo coolant. Don't let the engine or transmission overheat. If you are not the DIY type, then find a knowledgeable (with 960) and reliable Volvo independent shop.
Read the brickboard regularly to see what other 960 owners/experts say or do.
GOOD LUCK !
