Probably will just stop engaging the teeth after it breaks them.
I would guess you could get a rear assy for around 150.? OR You could get the shims and move the ring gear in closer to the pinion. It can be done by someone with some knowledge of rearend assy. It doesnt have to be perfect. You might read up on it and see if you want to tackle it. Sometimes removing 5 or 6 thousandths of backlash can lessen the sound. But, usually wont stop the sound if the rearend is badly worn.
Also if the bearings are wearing out on the pinion this would cause the pinion to move away from the ring gear. You cannot do anything at all except replace or rebuild. I would just get a new rearend out of the salvage yards.
I bet you could replace the rearend assy in as little as 6 hours.
