Hi Karl,

Multi meter should work - if you have a manual for your Volvo (Chilton's. Haynes, etc.) It will probably say what the resistance should be. I don't have my manuals here or i'd look it up for you.

Maybe someone can post the specs for you if you don't have a manual.

Distributor caps are cheap - i'd just replace it if it has been a while. Have a look at the cap in the meantime. If you see any discoloration or visible cracks the electrical current will sometimes take the path of least resistance and follow the weakness instead of going to your plug.

To me the idle problem sounds more ignition than fuel related. I'm sure you will get some other good responses to your post.
