J-type O/D troubleshooting?

I have a recently re-built O/D unit in my ES that has not very many miles on it since completely going through it, (<1,000 miles) It has started to act up where it has stayed in O/D even after de-activating the o/d switch. I have done some reading on various sites and the solenoid sticking open may be the culprit, I also wanted to ask if anyone has had this problem or if the pressure relief valve is another potential source? After dropping the O/D pan, small amounts of grundge, mostly silicone from gasket sealing was caught in the pickup screen. Do you think the fine filter can be cleaned since it was new upon rebuilding or should I just go ahead and get a new filter and o-rings since I am going to be inside it already? (have to make some spanner tools)

Any suggestions from knowledgeable first hands appreciated :-)
