Comments based on 25 years of using and selling AMSOIL:
An engine flush before changing is a very good idea, particularly in a high mileage engine. If you don't want to pop for $125, use a good engine flush such as made by AMSOIL or BG. With 4 qts of fresh non-synthetic, a cheap filter, the can of flush, and about 1/2 hour, your cost will be about $13-15.
After the flush, drop the synthetic in and drive on. The small amount of flush remaining in the engine is very volatile, and will be gone in short order.
Watch the dipstick. If you see a sudden increase in oil consumption, change the filter and top off. It is possible that the synthetic will continue to clean and carry stuff to the filter.
