I hate to even bring up another stupid question about flame traps but here goes.
I always clean this contrary little contraption with every oil change since I negelected it in the past and began loosing oil. I pulled it the other day for the routine cleaning and it had the usual small amount of crud, nothing terrible. I also changed the vacuum hose and cleaned out the passages which were clear. The car has reciently started (again) blowing a small amount of oil out under the filler cap plus a few other places as well, all of which it has done in the past and were all related to a plugged flame trap. The oil leak continues now with a trap that I know is clean. Question: Is there a filter below the flame trap in the engine? My father has a 740 a year older than ours that he had the identical problem with (blowing oil out under the filler cap etc). He had it in the shop last month to replace the rear main seals plus some other routine stuff. The mechanic told him the "filter under the flame trap was plugged". They changed it and he has no more problem with oil leaks. Any of you guys ever heard of it? Just wondering. The mechanic also told him that during an oil change, one could just pull the flame trap holder and dump some solvent down the rubber hose that the flame trap holder fits into on the manifold and this would unplug the filter and accomplish the same thing.
