As dick and the others have mentioned, electrical gremlins could be your problem so I won't cover that again.
I encountered a situation similar last summer with my 1983 242 turbo. I'm not sure how close the vaccuum systems are on a 1987 compared to a 1983 but I hope it works for you because it is a cheap fix if this is your problem. To make a long story short, I found that I had a hole somewhere in my vaccuum system. I started replacing the vaccuum hoses starting at the distributor (make sure they are the same length as the original). A Chevy dealer actually gave me the tube for free! I only replaced two hoses ... the one off the distributor and one branching off from that. It fixed my problem and I have never had that problem again.
