The strengthened 'K' block was introduced mid-year 1988. Turbos see a lot of abuse, and this one was likely ran without oil or at someone "dialed in" a bit too much boost.

You might be better off looking at replacing the entire motor. If possible, go with a '93 or later motor. You'll probably need to pull the Mitsubishi turbo from the donor car as well.
