temp gauge does not work 700 1987

I have a 87 760 GLE and the temp guage on the dash does not work. All of my other gauges seem to work fine. I tried testing it by disconecting the wire from the temp guage sender and turned the car on and the guage failed to move. was not sure if it is more likely the wire or the sender or possible something else. Any suggestions would be great.
