Was your gas tank full or empty when you left? Sometimes if your gas cap is not airtight (most are not) condensation can develop if the tank is not full. Water is of course heavier than gas and will sink to the bottom of the tank right next to the pickup line for the fuel pump.
This may not be the problem at all, but it's the first thing that comes to my mind.
