thanks to those of you who replied, you get a cookie. :)

i finally concluded to myself that it was not the cat. i brought it back to the mechanic place and told them that one of their guys had made a mistake. they put it on the lift, and agreed with me, and basically were making fun of the guy (who wasn't in today) for making a 'retarded mistake' for thinking it was the cat.

they welded the heat shield back on as well as another heat shield that was coming loose, and they didn't even charge me. :)
