electronic ign. worth it? 1800 1964

I've been thinking about chucking the points. Does any body have any suggestions regarding the changeover to electronic ignition? Does it make much performance difference, Which brands work well/are worth it, Can it be instaled and setup by a shadetree mech, ect ect.?
