Is it a deal? I suppose that mainly depends on you...
1- do you want or need a 760GLE? (I suppose you do).
2- I expect you won't be able to do any extensive tests on it? Look under the hood. Are there signs of recent care? Pull the dipsticks and look at the cleanliness of oil, does the oil filter look like it's been changed at some time in the not too distant past, how does the coolant look (bring one of those $2.49 coolant testers if you can, proper coolant is really important for these engines lest they corrode), open the oil filler cap and look for signs of obvious wear on the cam(s). At $250 I don't think it's reasonable to expect perfect maintenance, but you don't want something that's been run into the ground with no maintenance for the past 100K.
2a- Although the interior may be dirty, is it intact? Do the electrical goodies work? These can be a pain to debug and/or replace, especially stuff like electrical seat motors (if fitted) and climate-related kit. Stuff like windows (often dirty switches) and power locks are less of a problem.
3- Get them to start it. Does it run reasonably? These engines have never been known for a particularly smooth idle, but should run smoothly above idle. Can you drive it, even if only around the block? If so, does the transmission seem to work?
4- Are you prepared to put some work into it? They're more complicated than the 4-bangers, but they aren't the demon-spawn that some make them out to be either. Catching up on scheduled maintenance (or if the records have been lost, just performing a major service) and a day spent cleaning it up can make a lot of difference.
5- Are you willing to take a chance? These are pretty strong cars, but with this class of vehicle and little or no way to test it before purchase there's always a risk that there's a major malady lurking underneath. Whether you're willing (and able) to take the (small) chance that it's a dud and take the writeoff (although you may well be able to make your money back (or more) if you part it out) is up to you.
Good luck,
Bram
