Shifter button by closing causes current to flow through one leg of a transistor which "pulls" current through the other side which then causes the transistor to stay "closed" allowing current to flow to the solenoid.
The "other side" of the transistor is connected to ground through the 4th gear switch on the trans which allows current to flow only when the tranny is in 4th.
That is the abreviated version. Full explanation requires a lot more time than needed and inclusion of all the associated electronic parts that make up the relay.
Your dropping out of OD when letting up on the gas is classic of failing actuating piston seals. Sorry, time for a Removal of the OD fromm the tranny to fix.
