Any drawbacks of installing an ATF cooler for 960 700 1988

Thanks Joe,

I didn't see your post until today. If I understand you correctly, the setup is:
transmission -> radiator -> AUX cooler -> transmission

Should I install a thermostat so that the AUX cooler is bypassed when the transmission fluid temp is low? I think that this is the setup used on the 7series cars. If so, what temp should the thermostat open?

I was origionally thinking of bypassing the radiator to avoid the possibility of coolant getting into the ATF if the radiator developed an internal leak. I guess that the best thing would be to replace the radiator with a metal unit and add an AUX cooler with a thermostat.

There is a lot of talk about the benifits of synthetic ATF on the brickboard. Do you think that it is important to use synthetic in the transmission?
