I get an unusual message code when I enter radio code 700

Hello

After removing power from my car I have been trying to reset my radio. When the word "code" appears I enter my six diget code (16950) followed by the AUT botton. the radio then displays: a small "r" , P, and an "E" without the top horizontal line on the letter E. (rPE). After I try this three times the radio locks for another day. I have tried repeating code, and diffrent combanations on entry but no luck

Any Ideas? I have read everything in the FAQ and Forum sections.

Information:
1990 Volvo 760 turbo wagon

Radio type: Volvo sr-7145. It has two parts. The upper radio with eq. and lower seperate section is a tape deck.

Radio Code: 16950 I just purchased this car. The person who I bought the car from Is positive this is the correct code. I also watched her pull the radio and reset with this code when I was buying the car.
