Starting problem 200 1990

My '90 240DL has a quirk.
In cool weather, or when restarting a few minutes after shutting off the engine, the car starts up immediately. (I recently had the starter replaced.)
However, if the ambient temperature is above 70 degrees F it takes a few cranks before the engine starts, and the first few seconds of idle are pretty rough.
Any ideas, opinions, suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike
