If you are worried about the alternator, just yank it out and take it to a good auto electric shop, they will clean it up, replace the brushes and voltage regulator and check the bearings. I would recommend using a Volvo regulator/ brush pack. My alternator is 20 years old and works great after the before mentioned overhaul.
Typical fuel pump related problems stem from the fuel delivery hose in the gas tank. This hose deteriorates, decreasing the efficacy of the in-tank pump and thus causing the main pump to work double duty. Replacing this $1 piece of hose and the fuel screen ($15) are recommended preventive maintenance.
I've never had a coil go bad, and I cant recall more than a few cases of people reporting bad coils on this board either. A bad coil is a very simple thing to diagnose and I personally wouldnt waste the $$ on replacing it unless its toast.
Some things that you should do regularly are change the timing belt, especially on your vehicle. trans flush every 20k etc... But I'm sure that you knew that!
P.S. Preventive maint is not a waste of money! - Its how people get these cars to run 300k!
