Testing speedometer sensor with ohm meter 700

Well, now that I know it is shorted, has anyone ever taken a sensor out out of the diff? I can see from a picture of the new one that it seems to be pressed in and just has a sealing o-ring. I guess now might be a time to take off the diff cover and regasket. Doesn't look like it has been touched ever.
