Half an inch!??!! That's "BAD" in technical jargon.
Inspect your tie rod ends, both inner and outer IMMEDIATELY.
Any looseness, replace IMMEDIATELY!
Look close at the ball joints too while you're under there.
Should be immediately obvious what is worn out.
