Slop is comming from somewhere, possible choices are Ball Joints, Tie rod ends, or wheel bearings. Nethier are to expensive, but can be labor consumimng. If you have slop in the steering wheel itself, then check the steering column u-joints or possibly the rack. All these are covered in the Bentley guide to Volvos.
