connected to the back of the speedo is a tube in the center that has a metal flexible shaft that turns when the car is moving. Disconnect that from the speedo, it will be the one in the center, since there are two of them, one is for the o2 light. With it disconnected, drive around the block, and see if the shaft spins. If you have no movement of the shaft, I would say the problem is with the little gear in the tranny, otherwise it is a problem with your speedo gauge. I have a spare instrument panel from a 1982 245 that I would be willing to give to you for like 5-10 bucks + shipping.
