Kind of... there's different types of knocking/pinging apparently. Just listen/feel for anything out of the ordinary. I dunno about the resistor thing though, I have no idea, I haven't done electrical stuff in a long time. :) But you can go to radio shack and get a nice meter for about $25 that'll do the reading! :p
