It isn't necessary to raise the car. If you drop an important irreplaceable thing down into the splash pan and you can't fish it out, then you will have to jack up the car to drop the splash pan. DAMHIK
Once you get the radiator shroud and fan blade removed, there's a lot of room in there. I have the special tool to hold the crank pulley while removing or re-torquing the crank bolt, and I love it.
Have a good bottle of office White-Out handy. It's great to mark the belt and pulleys for easier alignment. Mark the belt edges where the stripes are. Also mark the belt edge four teeth back from the double stripe and mark the crank pulley four teeth back from its TDC mark.
You do have a Haynes and/or a Bentley book, right?
Depending on your alternative transportation, if you are deadlined while working on the Volvo, have parts handy for other work that's easily done while the timing belt is done. Things like all the other belts, the front seals (get an extra small one) a new timing belt tensioner, etc.
Remember that the a/c has TWO bolts to release to slacken its drive belt. I found the job eased by removing the p/s belt, also. And I have a small 10mm ratchet head wrench (ACE Hardware) for loosening the a/c belt adjuster bolt.
Another handy item is a box of vinyl gloves. The job is a greasy one.
Good Luck,
Bob
