I agree with other posters in that hall effect which is in the distributor on your year is most likely scenario. I disagree that it rarely fails. It does fail before 200K and when it does it will fail just as you described. Of course it's connector can also be bad as stated. Another possibility is the power stage which provides ignition pulses to the coil primary. It is mounted inside fender driver side near air filter box. If either of these fail you will have no spark, and will not see the normal slight pulsing of the tach while attempting to start. Also the fuel pumps will not run as primary spark pulses must be detected by the ECU before it activates the fuel pump relay.
