What does the 10W mean in reference to motor oil?

A 5W-30 oil has less viscosity (thinner and easier to flow) when cold than a 10W-30 oil, but both have nearly identical viscosity properties when hot. The trend in oil specifications is to reduce overall cold and hot viscosities in order to both improve low-temperature lubrication at startup and to improve fuel economy during hot operation.

Hence, Ford has gone to a 5W-20 oil.
