Personally, I don't trust the painted marks on the timing belts. I prefer to align the marks on the sprockets with their respective indexing marks. You have to ask yourself "Where was the replacement belt from? - Who painted the marks on it? - What did he/she smoke for breakfast before putting those marks on?"

I replaced the timing belts on my wife's 740 a couple weeks ago with a TRW brand belt. Rotating the belt to every concievable combination and then flipping it around and going through the same operation again, I could never find a point where the marks on the belt agreed with the indexing marks.
