It is actually possible to prise the switch mechanism apart, and re-assemble it again with a bit of patience.
Beating the living daylights out of the starter motor without result is not proof positive that the motor or the solenoid on it is not at fault. I reckon it's worthwhile to have a separate starter switch. You can wire it across two of the switch terminals so the key start function still works.
I suggest some proper diagnosis wouldn't go amiss. When you get these symptoms pull the thin single wire off the terminal on the starter. Then either test whether you have current at the wire with the switch in the start position, or jump the starter terminal from the battery. Having the car out of gear stops you from running yourself over. If you have current, or the starter operates condemn the starter. No current or no whirring starter, condemn the switch.
Personally I hate seeing aftermarket ignition switches in a 120, and would rather save the original.
