looking at a beautiful volvo...need advice

Well-here is a chance for me to tell you about our latest Volvo--we bought our '89 240 DL wagon- automatic-loaded-power windows-CC--AC--etc- 7 months ago from a private party. He was asking $4900 for it, with 143,000 miles on it. Found it, with a picture, in the Kelley Blue Book classifieds. Picture and description looked great--VIN check was clean-so we had to at least take a look at it--still feeling the $4900 was high. So--we go see the wagon--the guy backs it out from his garage--(it has been kept IN a garage when parked at his home for the 5 years he had it, and in the orginal owners' garage (when it was partked at his home) since it was new until 1997 when the 2nd owner--the guy we bought it from got it. Well-that was a plus--no heat cracked dash or interior--perfect--all the exterior molding perfect---. A "Charcoal grey" (graphite?)-paint-roof rack perfect-body excellent---charcoal cloth interior--no rips or tears--paint VERY good--no rust--3rd seat in perfect condition--. We test drive--tight and quiet--So--off to a good start---well--turns out this guy is a little "eccentric"(?)--perhaps--his hobby is to buy a used Volvo--drive it for about 5 years--put it in near perfect running condition--and sell it--at a loss--but of course he drove it for the 5 years. We eventually pay $125 for a check up--perfect. Everything in it works. He pulls out a folder--maybe an inch thick--full of detailed work orders and receipts-mostly from a dealer--a complete log of up keep and repairs--we sit down and total the receipts--roughly--all done at a Volvo Dealer-so of course the amount will be high--but we add up $18,000+ of receipts-he replaces things BEFORE they break--new water pump-new radiator--new altenator--changes the timing belt twice in the 5 years he had it--new front struts 2 years ago--had ALL the suspension parts--bushings--etc- replaced----engine and trans resealed--exhaust system replaced completely--(didn't need it--he just did it)--and much more-you get the picture. The dealer knew him well-said the guy was meticulous--always replacing something even though it may not have needed it-. Well--bottom line-we pay the $4900--( he was firm)--been a GREAT brick-you do get what you pay for--just be sure you know what you are getting. The '92 you are considering may be a great value at the asking price-maybe a real bargain! Take care of it--this guy seemed to 'over-do' it--(but hey--if you got the bucks--why not?) If you get it, keep us up on it!! Good luck. (BTW-yes-we take VERY good care of our wagon--We all know--Volvos are actual living--breathing family members!!)
