'90 Volvo 740 wagon tranny problems

David, thanks for the reply.
The fluid level is fine. As far as I can tell it does not appear to be burnt. There is a noise coming from the tranny like a power steering squeal. I have not pulled the pan nor checked the screen. The car will not back up hardly at all, and is not willing to move forward without a lot of RPMS and baulking.
I'm guessing that the trailer and occupants, clothing etc we were around 2,300 lbs. My manual sez the car can handle about 3,000 lbs, And before the trip I installed a tranny cooler. A local Volvo mechanic told me that I never should have flushed the tranny before the trip and once the car gets over 100,000 miles I should not change the fluid. I have a hard time believing that I should not have changed the transmission fluid! He also said I should NEVER use synthetics!
the car has about 136,00 miles on it, no leaks, everything else seems fine, except it don't want to move.
