240 Overheating ??

This could also be the troublesome temperature compensating board. Both my '86 and '88 have had this happen. If the temperature guage goes down toward normal after a sharp whack on the dash near the guage, you have a comp board which is not making good connection. If so, do a search on the archives and you'll get plenty of help on how fix this.
