What I meant is that the 1984-88 240 tailgates in the U.K. seem to be far more rust prone around the base of the window frame than ones before or after this time. I think there might be some sort of moisture trap which raises the rust.
We have a big problem as it is hard to find secondhand 'gates and nobody is 're-popping' them. If you can't find a good secondhand 'gate (from a later model), you either have to repair what you have or buy a new one from Volvo.
I think most of the general rust problems on Volvo 240s are down to the third, fourth of fifth owners of them thinking, 'I have a Volvo, so it will stay nice even if I don't do any maintenance'. How wrong they are! It is now hard to find a really good 240 as a consequence. I am lucky as I only have a bit of surface rust on the top face of a rocker panel where the paint has rubbed off.
