I think the question of whether one model is better than the other is down to personal preference. They are both cracking cars.
I have in front of me a 1988 model year U.K. price list from Jansens, a Volvo dealer, which gives the 'ex works' (No optional equipment) prices of the 240 range as £10694 for a GL manual sedan, up to £13749 for a GLT automatic wagon.
My GL manual sedan cost £205, which is half of the retail price for a 'Good' example, which mine certainly seems to be.
