Perhaps my latest 240 has a flimsy oil pan, but when I tried time honored method of jacking at the pan, I could see it start to bend. Yes, I padded things out well w/ wood and some thick stryofoam insulation. If I'd cranked any harder, I would have deformed area around where oil drain plug inserts and would have had a leak.
Someone posted a while back to avoid putting pressure on the oil pan, Volvo did change the gauge of the metal used for the thing so my experience wasn't just a coincidence. Had used the method successfully on a 242 as well as 2 140s no prob, perhaps extra weight of the 245 I was working on had something to do with it.
My solution, after getting front of car up on two jack stands, was to jack rearwards back where the flywheel/clutch assembly would be. Much stronger (aluminum alloy?)material back there, was successful but was amazed how much I had to lift the whole affair to actually get enough clearance to remove the mount.
I understand "correct" factory procedure is to lift engine/tranny w/ a jack then lower the front of the car, relatively speaking. Is this really possible in a backyard/garage?
