Heated Seats

I am also trying to fix my seat heaters and have found that the thermostat isn't working, none of the wires are broke. Is the thermostat necessary? Couldn't the heating element be connected directly, bypassing the thermostat and controlled by the switch? Is there a replacement thermostat available? The bulbs in both switches are burnt, but they can be replaced.
