1990 240DL - 150k Miles - Fuel/Exhaust Problem (long-sorry)

I'd bet on the fuel pressure regulator. Should be about five minutes to connect a gauge if the obvious test for a busted diaphragm doesn't indict it. The part is about $45 if you were to buy one yourself.

If I lost the bet, it might be the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. It costs about $30, and if broken, tells the computer to push enough fuel to start the car at 40 below zero. All the time.
