Going to pull the head, but what should I look for? 700

I have a blown headgasket and may have other issues with worn rings and such. I am going to pull the head and inspect. How can I see if my rings are worn and such? What type of wear can I expect and how can I determine it? I am the sort of guy who would install electric windows and do plugs and oil and discs and pads but have very little experience of engine overhaul. This is a project car so I am doing as much as I can myself.
