On my PV I just used a direct no-relay wiring setup utilizing a wiper switch placed in the cigarette lighter spot. The solenoid on the J-Type OD doesn't seem to draw much current at all - its just holding open a little valve and the oil pump is doing all the work engaging the OD. I'm not sure but I think the D-type OD used a lot more current.
