I understand that you are referring to the hole on top, where there was a rectangular cup that snapped in. It is about 4 inches deep and holds cassettes or other small objects, but makes a very poor cupholder. Fifteen year-old Volvo plastic is notoriously brittle. It's surprising that you have a console at all. The rectangular cup no doubt shattered when someone tried to snap it out to clean it.
